Dog Age Calculator (Science Version)
The '× 7' rule is a myth. A 2020 study of DNA aging in Labrador retrievers proposed a logarithmic formula instead — dogs age very fast early on, then slow down. Compare both.

Dog years to human years
| Dog's age | New formula | Old ×7 rule |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | 31 years | 7 years |
| 2 years | 42 years | 14 years |
| 3 years | 49 years | 21 years |
| 4 years | 53 years | 28 years |
| 6 years | 60 years | 42 years |
| 8 years | 64 years | 56 years |
| 10 years | 68 years | 70 years |
| 12 years | 71 years | 84 years |
| 15 years | 74 years | 105 years |
How it works
Formula: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, from a 2020 Cell Systems study comparing DNA methylation in dogs and humans.
It was built on Labrador retrievers, so other breeds — especially very large or very small ones — may age differently.
Frequently asked questions
Why isn't it just times seven?
Dogs mature extremely fast in their first year or two, then aging slows. A log curve matches that much better than a straight line.
