Total = price × (1 + rate). To remove tax: price = total ÷ (1 + rate).

Frequently asked questions
Why can't I just subtract the tax percent from the total?
Because the tax was calculated on the smaller pre-tax price. Dividing by (1 + rate) gives the exact answer.
